Happy International Women's Day!

As we celebrate International Women's Day on March 8th, it is important to recognize the achievements of women in various fields. One such field is plastic surgery, which was once dominated by men but now sees an increasing number of women making their mark. In this blog, we'll take a look at some notable female plastic surgeons throughout history and how they have contributed to the field.

Suzanne Noël (1878-1954)

Suzanne Noël was a French plastic surgeon who is considered to be one of the pioneers of the field. She was the first woman to become a member of the French Society of Surgery and was also the first female plastic surgeon to perform a facelift. Noël is credited with introducing a new technique for breast reduction surgery, which was later named after her.

G. "Jackie" Gauntlett (1917-1986)

G. "Jackie" Gauntlett was an American plastic surgeon who is known for her work in developing techniques for reconstructive surgery. She was the first female surgeon to join the Plastic Surgery Research Council and is credited with introducing new techniques for repairing facial injuries.

Ida Scudder (1870-1960)

Ida Scudder was an American physician and surgeon who spent much of her life in India. She is best known for establishing the Christian Medical College and Hospital in Vellore, India, which is now one of the top medical schools in the country. Scudder was a pioneer in the field of plastic surgery, particularly in the area of cleft lip and palate repair.

Dorothea Tanning (1910-2012)

Dorothea Tanning was an American artist and writer who also happened to be a skilled plastic surgeon. She began her medical training in the 1930s and later worked as a surgical assistant during World War II. Tanning is best known for her work in reconstructive surgery, particularly in the area of burn treatment.

Olga Jonasson (1926-2015)

Olga Jonasson was an American plastic surgeon who is best known for her work in breast reconstruction following mastectomy. She was the first female surgeon to be appointed as a professor of surgery at the University of Chicago and was also the first woman to serve as president of the American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons.

These women, and many others like them, have made significant contributions to the field of plastic surgery, challenging the notion that it is a male-dominated field. As we celebrate International Women's Day, we should take a moment to recognize the achievements of these and other trailblazing women who have paved the way for future generations of female surgeons. Their contributions have not only advanced the field of plastic surgery but also helped to break down gender barriers and promote equality in the medical profession.
